Shiatsu

Shiatsu is a form of bodywork that was developed in Japan in the twentieth century, however its origins come from the ancient Chinese techniques, Do-In and Anma. Do-In is very similar to yoga involving movement of the body to promote a smooth flow of the energy, whilst anma resembles western massage. These two techniques are the oldest forms of medical treatment in the Orient.

Differences in European massage and shiatsu lie in the social demands from which they developed - Anma and European massage directly stimulate blood circulation emphasizing the release of stagnated blood in the skin and muscles, and tensions and stiffness resulting from circulatory congestion; shiatsu emphasizes correction and maintenance of bone structure, joints, tendons, muscles and meridian lines whose malfunctioning distort the body’s energy and autonomic nervous system.

What to expect

Your first visit will take about 1 hour 15 minutes; I take a full medical history and discuss your expectations and needs. Follow on treatments generally last between 45 minutes and an hour.

Treatment takes place on a futon and unlike massage, is given through clothing. Loose comfortable clothing that allows free movement should be worn – shoes, socks, belts and excessive jewellery are removed. There is no fixed sequence as we are all individuals with different constitutions, levels of health and tolerance. A variety of techniques will be used – including gentle holding, pressing with palms, thumbs, fingers, elbows, knees and feet on the meridians, and when appropriate, more dynamic rotations and stretches. As the quality of your energy changes, the symptoms associated with an imbalance will gradually improve. Where necessary, advice will also be given on suitable dietary changes, lifestyle modifications and simple exercises that can be done at home.

Conditions that respond well to Shiatsu

A Shiatsu treatment appreciates the uniqueness of each person, its benefits are many, both in the maintenance of health and in the treatment of discomfort. Shiatsu is very effective, whether alone or in combination with another treatment in conditions where emotional disturbance or stress is an underlying factor, such as insomnia, anxiety and depression and muscular tension.

Shiatsu is also a wonderful treatment for disorders of the musculoskeletal system, as it works directly on the tissues involved. It is therefore effective in the treatment of backache, neck and shoulder stiffness and joint pain.

Signature Massage

Massage provides welcome relief from many of the emotional and physical symptoms that accompany persistent chronic stress. It promotes healing in tired and stiff muscles, releases tension, and stretches and loosens connective tissue.

I work with a synergy of Swedish and shiatsu massage techniques, combined with essential oils to relax and renew, rejuvenate and revitalize. The traditional Swedish technique promotes circulation while the concentrated, pressure-sensitive deep-tissue therapy detoxifies and relaxes overworked muscles. Essential oils are used to support and enhance your massage.
